Submarine Cables
10 September 2020 - 31 December 2050

The submarine cable exhibition recounts the history behind the cables linking the different continents, a technological achievement that has had a significant economic and social impact on global communications.
Submarine cables are responsible for most of the development that has taken place in communications. They are the “highways” information runs along, almost at the speed of light, allowing us to communicate instantly today.
In this exhibition, you can learn about the three generations of cables: telegraph, coaxial and optical. You can also try sending a telegraph and observe a hologram produced with one of the older cables.
This is a technological story that dates back 150 years, marked by critical and essential moments for our day-to-day existence. It also allows us to understand Portugal’s crucial role in the development of cables and its geostrategic location.
The exhibition presents various interactive digital solutions in which visitors can discover the techniques behind laying, running and maintaining submarine cables, from loading them onto ships and laying them on the seabed to anchoring and repairing them.
Special focus is also given to fibre optic cables that carry almost all global multimedia communications.
At the end, choose your favourite scene and take a selfie on the bottom of the sea.
You can also schedule a guided tour of the exhibition.
