Celebration of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações (Portuguese Communications Foundation) is celebrating the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day this year with the theme Broadband for Sustainable Development, on 16 May. This annual celebration marks the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Paris on 17 May 1865, under its former name of the International Telegraph Union.
The morning session begins at 9:00 am, with a debate led by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (Foundation for Science and Technology) on the theme Digital inclusion in economic development. The opening session will be chaired by Leonor Parreira, Secretary of State for Science, who will be joined by Joao Nuno Ferreira, chairman of FCT,l.P. The debate has a distinguished panel of speakers, including speakers from FCSH, UNL and ACIDI.
In the afternoon, between 3pm and 5pm, there will be a debate organized by APDC – Associação Portuguesa para o Desenvolvimento das Comunicações (Portuguese Association for the Development of Communications) and APDSI – Associação para a Promoção e Desenvolvimento da Sociedade da Informação (Association for the Promotion and Development of the Information Society) on the Day’s theme – Broadband for Sustainable Development. The session will see participation from Luis Vidigal (APDSI), Jose Perdigoto (ANACOM) and other leading sector figures.
The Portuguese Communications Foundation Institutional Session starts at 5pm, led by the Chairman of the Management Board, Jose Luis Almeida Mota, followed by a presentation of the conclusions of the two FCT, I.P. and APDC I APDSI debates. Continuing the session, Jose Morais de Oliveira will talk about the ICPC-UNEP Report, Submarine Cables the Oceans; Connecting the World: this is followed by a presentation by Manuel Rosa da Silva, CTIO of PT Portugal. ANACOM’s vice-chairman, Jose Perdigoto, will then close the session.
On the occasion of this Day, the following exhibitions will be inaugurated: Habitat XXI _ Wherever I am, I feel at home; Digital Transformation – The Sky is not the Limit and Generation C – All Connected – From the abacus to the Cloud.
